The ugly truth seen through the tangle of my chaotic mind

You would think, after three months living in a car I would be thrilled to have a roof over my head again.  Reality is just the opposite though.  I was angry at being forced to replace things that I had already owned just over six months ago.  It wasn’t fair, fate had dealt a fatal blow and here I was, on my knees, again, starting over.

Each item I bought left a new scar in my empty soul.  I had already worked hard to do this once before.  Colleting the items over years, decades and now, having to do it in just a few weeks.  I was cranky, to say the least, having to spend money I didn’t have on items that were given away from someone who didn’t even own them.

The $20 microwave cupboard, that was taller than me and weighed more.  I had to rock the piece corner by corner up the 4 stairs and into my apartment.  All the time praying I wouldn’t damage it more than it already was.  It was filthy, sitting in someone’s basement for God knows how long.  Along with it came a room sized rug, two boxes of dishes and silverware.  All free, waiting to be discarded.  To me treasures, free and desperately needed so I could exist.

The free dresser that I found to be full of curtains.  Nice ones that I could use, their owner not wanting to bother with them anymore.  A surprise bonus with the free item I now had in my room.  A bit dirty, but cleaned up looked almost new.

The kitchen table that came with six chairs and a middle leaf that made it as big as the room itself.  That one took two trips, being too big to fit in my car.

The day the rental company showed up with my couch and bed I was excited to have something to sleep on that wasn’t the front seat of the car or the air mattress that the cats had kindly dug into with their claws and caused it to leak.  No doubt it was my kitten Karma, now that she lives with me she thinks she owns the place.

The bed was a temporary disappointment though.  They delivered a king sized frame, it barely fit through the door and was bigger than the bedroom it was to go in.  It had to go back and be reordered. Because of course the universe said, Here, have a bed the size of my whole apartment. Afterall, I complained about a twin sized air mattress. had to wait a few more days before I could sleep in a real bed again.  I’d have to continue to put air in my mattress each night so I could sleep.  A gentle hiss each time I rolled over.

The couch soon became a favorite, to the cats anyway. Each would systematically claw into the sides each time creating pulls in the fabric.  Before long it’s become a well-worn and well-loved piece.  The couch is theirs now. Like everything else in this apartment, I’m just borrowing it.

Still trying to furnish my life, with whatever the universe dumps on Marketplace,

K.
